Their distributionis now restricted to a few locations in northernSumatra.The most southerly viable population is in theBatang Toru region. Until now, this populationbeen poorly recognized, studied and protected.The area's landscape includes both forest andareas farmed by local people. Their gardensinclude a range of tree crops, including rubber.Like the orangutan, these people support theirneeds from the local environment, of which theyare stewards.
