Mental models of watershed ecosystems by local farmers are studied and compared them with models developed through a scientific approach, using two case studies. The first one was conducted in Sumberjaya, West Lampung, Indonesia, focusing on erosion and water quality and flow, and the other in Dong Cao catchment, Vietnam, focusing on soil-plant interactions. Some characteristics of two modelling approaches (spatial patterns and hydrological process models) applied to the relationships between land cover and watershed functions are tabulated and discussed.
