Rewards for environmental services and benefits to the poorLessons from Asia

Emerging approaches to payment for environmental services (PES) mostly only focus on the efficiency in providing the services. Nevertheless, neglect of the perspectives of all actors in the landscape and their livelihood strategies can jeopardize the success of PES and contradict the global mandate. Rewards for environmental services (RES) link global priorities on poverty reduction and environmental sustainability and are designed to balance effectiveness and efficiency with fairness and pro - poor characteristics.
