Potential of timber based hedgerow intercropping systems as smallholder agroforestry option on sloping acid upland soils

Timber hedgerow intercropping system is a frontier issue in the humid tropics of Southeast Asia particularly in the Philippines. It has two phases: simultaneous and sequential or fallow. The fallow phase is the consequence of the simultaneous phase when trees had developed canopies to shade and make the associated annual food crops less productive. during the simultaneous phase, trees were found to be hedge to sustain production of associated annual crops, such as upland rice and maize. Gmelina arborea, on the other hand, was found out to be more competitive with crops. These two species were popular choices among farmers' agroforestry systems. These two species were also being compared together with natural grass or shrub fallow as fallow management strategy.
