Policy reform and extension of technical innovations as Alternatives to Slash-and-Burn in Southeast Asia.

The project was initiated in August 1999, with three major components: policy development for community forestry and agroforestry; timber marketing and trade reforms; and extension innovations to accelerate the impact of Alternatives to Slash-and-Burn. Support through the USDA grant has helped ICRAF to provide assistance to governmental and no-governmental institutions in momentous policy reformand accelerated adoption of Alternatives to Slash-and-Burn during a time of drastic economical and political changes in Indonesia and Philippines. The critical issues included resolving the conflicting rights within the state defined forest zone and the implimentation of innovations to increase rural incomes while enhancing environmental objectives.
