CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Policies for improved land managament in smallholder agriculture: the role for research in agroforestry and natural resource management

This main purpose of this chapter is to identify significant research areas for the World Agroforestry Centre (and other natural resource management research centres) that will contribute to improved policies for land management. To do this, the chapter first describes the nature and extent of land deg - radation and argues why this is a major policy issue. It then applies a conceptual framework to identify the proximate and underlying causes of land degradation. Special attention is paid to the effect of poli - cies, especially those related to land tenure, soil management, and research and extension. It concludes by reviewing the Centre’s experiences in policy research and advocacy and proposing three key areas for intervention in the future: identification of land management problems and opportunities, design of investment/response priorities, and monitoring the impact of policy reforms.
