SUMMARY OF KEY ISSUESWhat is special about watershed management compared with other resource managementi)Watersheds are integrators of people, resources and sectors.ii) Watersheds link people who may never see each other and who may have vastly differentwealth, livelihoods and socio-economic status.iii) Watersheds include multiple resources – forests, wetlands, fisheries, agricultural land,grazing land, water.iv) Good planning needs to be based on clear understanding of land use – hydrologic systemsand interactions.v) Investments are long-term and generate benefits and costs that extend across large distances.vi) Interventions that make good sense for individuals or communities may not be good for thetotal society that depends on the watershed.vii) There is a large range of watershed management situations across the African continent interms of hydrology, policy, culture, governance, investment and the spatial distribution ofpoverty within watersheds.
