CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Mycorrhizae on dipterocarps in rubber agroforests (RAF) in Sumatra

This thesis explores the way rubber agroforests (RAF) in the lowland humid forest zone ofSumatra (Indone sia) can be enriched with dipterocarp timber trees, whether or not the fungithat the tree needs to make ectomycorrhiza (EcM) partnerships in its root system are stillpresent depending on land use history, what the identities of these fungi are and to whatdegree inoculation in the nursery stage is necessary. This topic of research was selectedas it represents a practical problem that is relevant for countering the negative effects oftropical deforestation and can benefi t from recent advances in using molecular techniques foridentifi cation of fungi. The thesis is based on fi eld surveys, a fi eld experiment and laboratoryassays and experiments.
