Efforts to classify this variability into homogeneous ecological units to facilitate the transfer of technologies across geographical areas, encounter serious constraints. It is not difficult to identify mappable criteria that will separate farm areas into distinct units. However, it is challenging to specify the relevant criteria that influence the adaptation of particular technologies, and to use the spatial data that is available to make efficient extrapolation judgements. This activity is often constrained by limited data and insufficient knowledge of how the data can be used. ";
