CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Managing impacts of tree introduction and cultivation on biodiversity

Pests and diseases are the number one reason for crop yield loses around the world and the number one threat to food security in the developing world.Estimates suggest that as much as 35% to 50% of food production is lost to pathogens, insects and weeds. Smallholder farmers in developing coutries are perhaps the hardest hit, as they can not afford chemical control measures and are more vulnerable to loss of food or income. Ironically, massive pesticide usage in developed countries does not reduce losses to low levels. Recognition of this has led many to argue for a more ecological approach based on understanding interactions between planned and unplanned biodiversity.
