AB Watershed functions and the way they are affected by 'development' aremuch debated and are nearly everybody's concern…..When natural forests are logged or cleared by slash-and-burnmethods for establishing tree crop plantations or upland foodcrops…,when roads are built on forested slopes and induce landslides andrapid pathways for mudstreams to reach the rivers…,when people start to live in upper watersheds and pollute streams bydomestic use, livestock or use of agrochemicals…,when the demand for water increases because of greater use forlowland irrigation, industry or cities…,when fast-growing trees that use more water than other vegetationare planted,when government agencies claim control and impose their solutionson the local community,…when the floodplains and wetlands that used to provide storage andbuffer capacity are drained for 'development'…orwhen villages are built in places that are prone to flooding andmudslides…….the end result is 'problems with watershed functions' that affect allof us one way or another.
