Farmers of the future: a strategy for action

Organizations and institutions working in partnership with the World Agroforestry Centre on the 'Farmers of the Future' initiative met in May 2002 for round-table talks. The talks were jointly organized by the World Agroforestry Centre and RELMA to discuss ways in which different partners will complement and support the 'Farmers of the Future' initiative. Participants jointly generated a well-defined strategy for the improvement of natural resource management education and its incorporation in basic education systems. Much of the information in this document is based on the outputs of the round-table discussions. A clear consensus has been defined involving ten cornerstones within a conceptual framework, which seek to enhance the relevance and impact of basic education programmes. These cornerstones have been identified as fundamental conditions, which need to be in place for the integration of natural resource management in basic education to be effective.
