Enabling rural transformation and grassroots institutional building for sustainable land management and increased incomes and food security

Low adoption of sustainable land management (SLM) practices is a major factor in agro-ecosystem productivity, food insecurity and increasing poverty in East Africa. Although numerous SLM technologies exist, weak grassroots institutions characterized by low capacity, failure to exploit collective capital and poor knowledge sharing have hampered adoption of SLM practices and achievement of food security in the region. Inadequate NRM policy processes and scant market integration have exacerbated the situation pointing to the need for institutional and policy change. For farmers to benefit from technical innovations, policy and market incentives and vibrant rural institutions are needed. IFAD sharesthis understanding, and is generously funding a 4-year project to address this need. The overall project goal is to foster support for grassroots organizations to participate meaningfully in governance processes affecting their livelihoods and well-being, as well as the environment
