Economic assessment of sustainable land management in Rwanda

Preliminary financial costbenefit analysis (CBA) found that initial investment costs to construct terraces for sustainable land management (SLM) were rather not necessarily prohibitive in relative to overall cost compositions. Rather, yearly provision costs of crop management, including mineral and organic fertilizer inputs, hired labour, and especially opportunity costs of family labour, could lead to the nonviability of SLM schemes financially, even at moderate yield assumptions. Research is required to ensure extension services of affordable technologies to smallholde rs which could minimize input costs while maximizing yields. Furthermore, socioeconomic CBA is required to account for impacts of ecosystem and recreation values.
