• Garcinia kola Heckel (Clusiaceae) is fruit treespecies indigenous to West and Central Africa.The tree, commonly called bitter kola, playsalcrucial role in the local ethno-medicine andbelongs to the most commercialized non-timberforest products in this region1. Each partof G. kola can be used as medicine.• The most valued product are seeds which arechewed by local people to treat gastric problemsor for their typical astringent taste2.• The kernels contain a wide range of usefulphytochemicals such as tannins and flavonoids.Biflavonoid complex kolaviron is one of the mostpromising components. It has a great potentialin treatment of malaria3 and is recently studiedfor its therapeutic potential on benign prostatichyperplasia4.• However, basic information on intraspecificdiversity and the exact nutritional valuesof the kernels are missing.
