The appreciation and adoration of trees has a strong psychological and social foun - dation in most cultures. Trees feature in all aspects of culture: language, history, art, religion, medicine, politics and even social structure. The variety of cultural values and symbolic functions ascribed to trees are as numerous and diverse as the communities and cultures. Below we describe four of the cultural services that trees provide in the drylands of Eastern Africa.
