Agroforestry policy needs for its growing opportunities: a proposal for an Agroforestry policy initiative

The main purpose of this paper is to identify and demonstrate the importance of policy issues for agroforestry to reach its potential impact on development and environment and to propose a way forward for addressing these policy issues. The paper begins with defining and describing what agroforestry is, followed by evidence of its current and growing importance. This is followed by a list of constraints to agroforestry’s impact potential and their links to underlying policy, laws and regulations. The final section discusses a proposed agroforestry policy initiative to address these constraints and presents some of the ideas and thoughts on the concept from early consultations.
