Reviews the potential of agroforestry for soil conservation, including both the control of erosion and maintenance of soil fertility. The effects of trees on soil properties and processes, the role of roots, suitable trees and shrub species are all addressed. Concludes that appropriate agroforestry systems have the potential to control erosion, maintain soil organic matter and physical properties and promote efficient nutrient cycling.
