AB The training on “Tree Crop Domestication in Edo State” is the second in series to be organized within the framework of the SII/World Agroforestry Project entitled “Advancing Agroforestry Research and Development through Training and Education” through a Small Grant Scheme. This project consists of a series of activities (specialist training courses, training materials development, instructional design research, etc.) taking place over a 5-year period that aim at enabling national and regional training and education institutions in developing countries to conduct appropriate and innovative agroforestry and natural resources management research, development, training and education reflecting advances and recent developments in these areas as obtained by the Centre and its partners. The purpose of the ‘Small Grants Scheme’ is to assist individual training and education institutions, interested in agroforestry and natural resources management, to address certain specific needs in areas which are not directly addressed through the other project activities. The World Agroforestry Centre, as the executing and coordinating agency for the SII/World Agroforestry Centre projects awards these Small Grants on a competitive basis to deserving institutions. The project entitled Tree Crop Domestication in Edo State is a collaborative project between the Edo Agricultural Development Programme - Nigeria and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF). This project is designed to facilitate the development of productive and diverse agroforestry systems to enhance the livelihood of resource poor rural farmers. It aims at assisting farmers domesticate variety of short gestation high value indigenous fruit and medicinal trees in Edo State using various vegetative propagation techniques. The purpose of this training was to upgrade the knowledge and skills resource poor rural farmers in tree domestication and to extend recent advances in the domestication of high value trees in Edo. These advances in agroforestry tree domestication research and development was shared with participants through a series of short presentations, methods and approaches and practical exercises to help them initiate and successfully implement the newly acquired skills and knowledge in the field of agroforestry tree domestication. This report gives an overview of the events and happenings that took place during the training in three different locations namely: Egoro Amede village in Edo North Senatorial District; Sabongida Ora village in Edo Central Senatorial District and Ekhoe Nuwaya village in Edo South Senatorial District respectively. It also intends to serve as a source of inspiration for future training organizers either in this domain or in other areas of sustainable natural resource management.
