Initiatives examining payments for environmental services (PES) is gaining increased interest and with the advent of a number of pilot projects and research studies is starting to generate some lessons and experiences that indicate a possibility that PES, under the right conditions, could contribute to poverty alleviation and a reversal of environmental degradation. The research, development, education and policy community in Indonesia have been exploring various PES initiatives and decided to hold a national workshop to bring together stakeholders to share lessons learned. The workshop held 14-15 February 2005 was jointly organized by the RUPES Project (Rewarding Upland Poor for Environmental Services They Provide, coordinated by the World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF)), the RUPES Technical Committee of Indonesia, LP3ES (Lembaga Penelitian, Pendidikan dan Penerangan Ekonomi dan Sosial) and WWF-Indonesia, and BAPPENAS (Badan Perencanaan Pembangunan Nasional/National Planning and Development Agency). With the generous support of the Ford Foundation, this two-day workshop invited all important stakeholders in analysis and development of payment for environmental services to share their experience and stimulate and support the debate about payment for environmental services and its potential to reduce poverty and to support the sustainability of environmental services. This workshop consisted of three sessions. The opening session provided participants with the opportunity to listen and discuss with national and international experts the concept and practices of payment for environmental services. In the second session participants from local initiatives presented their own work and experiences in implementation, capacity building and influencing policy in environmental services schemes. The third session was the development and agreement on a set of recommendations as well as further plans and possible actions arising from the workshop.
