CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Introducing biochar-producing gasifier cookstoves in a rural community

Biochar (carbonized biomass) can have good effects on soil fertility, but biomass resources for its production are limited. Fuel-efficient biochar-producing top-lit updraft (TLUD) gasifier cookstove may be an option to reduce fuel use and indoor air pollution while producing biochar. There is potential for synergies between improved ecosystems, improved health of women and children and climate change mitigation. However, it all depends on the cookstove being adopted and integrated into the cooking systems of the rural households. Most households used three-stone open fire as their most common cooking method. Aim To identify factors that influence uptake of biochar-producing cookstove in a rural community in Kwale county, a coastal area in Kenya.
