Although traditional 'slash and burn' farming systems, based on long fallow rotations have become rare in the humid tropics of Indonesia, slash and burn is still the most commonly used technique for land clearing where forests are converted into other land uses. Estimates of how much forest carbon is lost to the atmosphere due to such land use change depend on the C stocks of the previous forest vegetation, the decline of soil C stocks after conversion and the build up of new stocks in the new land use system.
