Over the past two decades, mechanisms to address sustainable protection and livelihood options for different landscapes and ecosystem areas have emerged. Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) and mechanisms such as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) have shown that a precondition for long-term green economies requires rewarding the sustainable protection, safeguarding of targeted areas.
