Local perceptions of and priorities for land restoration in northwest Ethiopia

The need to engage local actors in the design and implementation of land restoration initiatives is well recognized. Yet, priority mapping for land restoration rarely incorporates the knowledge and perspectives of different stakeholders, especially that of farmers, resulting in a lack of information regarding their preferences and priorities on when and where to act1 . Combining participatory mapping, farmer interviews and a field survey of soil erosion prevalence, this research aimed to explore local perceptions of, and priorities for, land restoration in the Amhara region of northwest Ethiopia, and assess their implications for future restoration strategies.
