It has challenged the existing dichotomy between agriculture and forestry as separate policy domains within the generic ‘land-use’ concept. At the field scale, it is a generic term encompassing a diversity of systems, including homegardens, shaded perennial-crop systems (e.g. coffee, cacao), silvoarable and silvopastoral systems, hedgerows, windbreaks, riparian systems and fallows.
