Etude des produits forestiers non ligneux d'Afriques et perspectives: a study of non-timber forest products in Central Africa: reality and prospects

NTFPs are important for Central African populations because of their close links with the forest environment. This study highlights the remarkable range of NTFPs associated with the rich biodiversity of the Congo Basin's forests. NTFPs are well known to local communities because they have been using them for a long time. Access to these resources is generally governed by customary laws, which are often in contradiction with official regulations in the different countries. Threatd to NTFPs arise from two main causes: commercial exploitation of the resources themselves and industrial timber exploitation. This paper offers solutions that would take all the different stake holders and NTFPs into account in forest management plans.
