Cocoa Farmers in South and Southeast Sulawesi

Cocoa, or many refer as the fruit of the gods, is one of the biggest sources of livelihood for farmers in Sulawesi, Indonesia. As a matter of fact, around 2.2 million smallholder farmers in Sulawesi cultivate cocoa in 1.5 hectares land, contributing 67% of the country’s production. In AgFor’s project sites in the provinces of South and Southeast Sulawesi, most of cocoa is produced by smallholder farmers. In the recent years, pest and disease attack has become worse that some farmers decided to switch to other commodities for example pepper and clove. In order to address the challenge, AgFor Sulawesi provides assistance, building farmers’ capacity on farming management, pest and disease control, post-harvesting process and marketing.
