Designing and implementing effective, equitable blue carbon policies and projects

Designing and implementing effective, equitable blue carbon policies and projects

14–15 June 2023, Ho Chi Minh City, Hybrid

Background and objectives

Over the past two years, the forest carbon and mangrove carbon markets have received much attention from policymakers and investors around the world. Globally, numbers of forest carbon investors and carbon credit contractors have increased sharply over the past 12 months. Numbers of investors wishing to purchase mangrove carbon credits in Vietnam have also skyrocketed. With the potential for a forest carbon market, to be able to design and implement high-value forest carbon projects, units and organizations in Vietnam need to have good professional knowledge in three areas: market access; appropriate project technical design; and social safeguarding. Equipped with such knowledge, they could bring significant economic, social and environmental benefits to Vietnam in general, and the 13 provinces of the Mekong Delta in particular.

Currently, many public administration units in Vietnam, including the 13 Mekong Delta provinces, are unfamiliar with the necessary specialized skills and knowledge. Therefore, to support Vietnam and the 13 Mekong Delta provinces in designing and implementing effective mangrove carbon projects for gaining access to sustainable finance, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), Nong Lam University (NLU) and the Association of Vietnamese Scientists and Experts (AVSE) are co-organizing a one and a half-day training course on 14–15 June 2023.
