When it comes to frameworks such as REDD+, safeguards are processes and policies that help ensure land-use activities are carried out in ways that respect and uphold the rights of communities, Indigenous peoples and the environment.
The GCS REDD+ program created the ‘Safeguards at a glance’ series to explore standards and guidelines regarding the rights and social inclusion concerns of Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPs and LCs) that steward the forests where climate solutions, like REDD+, are implemented.
Each flyer provides lessons that may be applied in different contexts, allowing different projects to cross-compare their safeguards provisions and presenting evidence that policymakers and practitioners can use to better understand the implications and benefits of supporting IP and LC rights, facilitating more meaningful participation, monitoring and verification of safeguards.
The series studied REDD+ safeguards in Indonesia, Peru and the DRC, including a comparative analysis of all three. It also created spotlight publications on supporting IPs and LCs and women in those groups, as well as analyzing voluntary standards supporting community land, resource and carbon rights and the mechanisms for monitoring, reporting, verification and grievance redress.
