CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Soil health on smallholder farms: InPac-S approach

Farmers are the largest group of natural resource managers on the planet. How can we foster knowledge-sharing processes that contribute to better natural resource-management decisions and improve the capacity to adapt to global change among smallholder farmer communities? Related blog at http://buzz.mw/b5cos_l This video describes the evolution, steps, and application of the InPaC-S methodology, a participatory approach originally developed in Brazil by World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), EMBRAPA and CIAT, and now being applied by ICRAF in Africa. The methodology blends local knowledge and scientific knowledge, with scientists and farmers working together to determine locally appropriate soil management options to address commonly encountered constraints such as the loss of soil organic matter, erosion and nutrient depletion. Among these options is the integration of the right trees and shrubs into farms. The participatory work also seeks to strengthen local institutions that support rural communities in making decisions related to soil management.
