The volume presents papers presented in an international conference convened by the CGIAR and the US National Academy of Sciences with the objective of exploring the eradication of hunger and poverty in developing countries. The conference was a response to the pressing need for an open inclusive and participatory debate on potential benefits and risks of biotechnology, grounded in scientific evidence, and concerned with the common good. The participants sought actively the diverse technological, environmental, public health, economic, ethical and social viewpoints so that linkages could be explored. In short the key objectives of this conference were to: broaden awareness of developing countries' views on issues related to biotechnology and to contribute to a science-based understanding of the issues and public concerns on how these might be addressed.
