Climate change and biofuels - current status and way forward

Climate change is real and happening. Human activities such as land use and transportation are the major drivers of these climate changes. Liquid biofuels, if carefully delivered, can mitigate these changes to some extent. The claims of GHG reductions through biofuels have been changed mainly from a full life cycle analysis perspective. From this perspective the biofuels from some of the current crops can generate more greenhouse gas emissions than fossil fuels. The amount and nature of GHG emitted can also differ depending on the crops, where it is grown, the agronomic practices followed and its further processing. Agronomic practices and the management of crop also play an important role in determining the overall environmental impact of a bioenergy production system- the so called swing potential of a cropLand use changes (LUC) such as deforestation and forest degradation accounts for approximately 12-17% of global GHG emissions. The LUC as of result of diversion of food crops for fuel purposes will also lead to'fuel vs. food' debate.
