Although they are of very important value for farmers, agroforestry parklands have faced considerable degradation of their tree cover in diverse areas of the Sahel during the last decades. Several shrub and tree species have been affected, causing a reduction of the biodiversity in these parklands. Among the various factors that may explain this phenomenon, one can mention agricultural practices unadapted to the coexistence of trees and crops in the same plot. In order to better understand the links between land management practices and biodiversity, a study was conducted in seven villages in the region of Segou, Mali. The number, density and biodiversity of shrub and tree species were determined in the three main land management units of these villages: homefields, bushfields and silvopastoral areas. Results show that biodiversity varies significantly among land management units in five out of the seven villages of the study. In general, silvopastoral areas present th e highest level of biodiversity in shrub and tree species, while homefields present the lowest. A better understanding of the state of biodiversity in the agroforestry parklands of Mali should permit better management of their tree resources.
