Peatland restoration in Southeast Asia: challenges and opportunities

Tropical peatlands are highly significant to global efforts to combat climate change, as well as wider sustainable development goals. As such, the protection and restoration of peatlands is vital in the transition towards a low-carbon and circular economy.

Despite the growing awareness of the importance of peatlands, there are still critical information and research gaps that need to be filled in order to better support peatland restoration projects. Information is required on issues such as: the costs and benefits of peatland restoration for water quality; how restoration activities can serve as a key approach for enhancing the wellbeing of communities; and approaches for unlocking the financial resources required for restoration

Speakers will share, discuss, and present the latest research and a wide range ofexperiences about peatlands restoration.

The session will highlight:

  • challenges and opportunities in peatland restoration, in order to distil key points for restoration strategies;
  • ways to address policy issues;
  • access to financial resources; and
  • on-the-ground experience on how restoration can enhance the wellbeing of communities.

This session is aligned with the International Tropical Peatlands Center’s mandate to facilitate interdisciplinary dialogues to advance the conservation and sustainable management of peatlands globally.
