TREES FOR RESILIENCE
TREES FOR RESILIENCE
CIFOR-ICRAF at UNFCCC COP28
30 Nov – 12 Dec 2023, Dubai, United Arab EmiratesLet's talk about food trade and how to build supply chain resilience amidst climate shocks
Recent heatwaves, droughts, flooding, and the war in Ukraine have laid bare vulnerabilities in the global system of food trade. Fully 25% of agricultural production is traded internationally, and global food trade has become a key determinant of food security. While food trade can help to buffer food insecurity by shifting supplies from areas of surplus to areas of shortage, it can also play a crucial role in the transmission of shocks, both natural and human caused.
This session seeks to explore the food trade risks compounding with the climate crises and conflicts around the world. We will look at the current dynamics of the global food trade, interconnected food markets, and the risk that climate change, environmental degradation, economic change, and political instability pose to our food supplies.
