TREES FOR RESILIENCE
TREES FOR RESILIENCE
CIFOR-ICRAF at UNFCCC COP28
30 Nov – 12 Dec 2023, Dubai, United Arab EmiratesTrees, Ecosystems Services and Adaptation to Climate Change
Using an ecosystem services perspective, we will explore how trees contribute to adaptation and how this can be used to help in measuring progress to the GGA. Forests and trees play a critical role in food and nutritional security for 1.6 billion smallholders; By providing ecosystem services and products, trees are critical to the successful adaptation of farming systems, households, and landscapes. That includes the shading and cooling effects from trees – essential for plants, animals, humans and cities – contribution to water availability, infiltration and storage in the soil, as well as water quality and management of such risks as floods and droughts. TreesAdapt is CIFOR-ICRAF’ s response to the huge and urgent challenge of climate change adaptation. It is a platform that aims to answer the demand for adaptation, to enhance forests, trees and agroforestry contribution, to support countries and actors with appropriate knowledge and tested solutions in a range of contexts, all along the adaptation cycle, from the identification of impacts of climate change, vulnerability assessments, Identification and selection of adaptation options, including those benefitting to other sectors, with particular attention to mitigation and other co-benefits to construct “business cases” that can attract a diversity of public and private investments. Trees adapt will also support the implementation of measures, including building an enabling environment (such as improved governance and finance for adaptation with forests and trees). Finally, it will support Monitoring and assessment of implementation and adaptation effectiveness, to learn and avoid maladaptation.
