TREES FOR RESILIENCE
TREES FOR RESILIENCE
CIFOR-ICRAF at UNFCCC COP28
30 Nov – 12 Dec 2023, Dubai, United Arab EmiratesTrees, food systems and resilience
Forests, trees and agroforests have been proven to promote food security and ecological and livelihood resilience globally. In this session, we attempt to connect the nexus of trees, food systems, and resilience. This is informed by CIFOR-ICRAF's work across the globe on the value of trees in enhancing the resilience of food systems, noting that increased degradation of over 40% of the global land affects food security. Further, a population of about 800 million people globally faces undernourishment with World Bank (2022) estimating that 20% of the African population is already facing acute food insecurity. Yet, trees if well managed and developed within the crop systems could promote farm productivity and yields, enhance ecosystem benefits, and strengthen the ability of the farmers to meet their needs. The session brings together different players and actors in forestry, agriculture, research and development, and policymakers, among others to address the question of how trees can promote food systems resilience with minimal tradeoffs.
