TREES FOR RESILIENCE

CIFOR-ICRAF at UNFCCC COP28

30 Nov – 12 Dec 2023, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
SESSION

Tree Commodities, Poverty Reduction and Resilience

Green tree commodities represent the fastest-growing land uses in Africa with huge potential to address poverty reduction and promote both ecosystems and livelihood resilience. It is estimated that tree commodities cover 100 million hectares of arable lands and impact over 150 million farmers directly and over 600 million indirectly. In sub-Saharan Africa, tree commodities contribute to over 15% of the GDP and present a huge potential to restore degraded landscapes. However, there remain huge investment gaps in transforming the tree commodities leading to low returns to the small-scale holder farmers. Further, the expansion of tree commodities has come at the expense of deforestation, forest degradation, land use and change cover, among other challenges. This session brings together diverse stakeholders to showcase the value of green tree commodities based on CIFOR ICRAF’s extensive work on Tree Commodities and Green Resilient Economies Book and the Green Tree Commodities Initiative. It will also bring different actors to give their diverse perspectives on promoting tree commodities, including private sector perspectives, policy perspectives and marketing perspectives. Additionally, the organization will invite all its partners and donors to join the discussions, along with the African countries within which the organization has various projects.
