Explore program invites research proposals on forest landscape governance in Southeast Asia

The Explore program encourages researchers from Southeast Asian universities and research institutions to propose innovative studies on forest landscape governance. These grants aim to connect research with policy, supporting governments in crafting inclusive and sustainable approaches to managing forest landscapes effectively.

Research grant details

Explore will provide grants to support up to three research projects, offering a funding range between USD 80,000 to USD 83,000 per project for 18 to 24 months. The funding allocation is based on the complexity of the research, the scale of issues addressed, and the extent of transboundary approaches proposed.

Focus themes

Proposals should address one or both of the following themes:

  1. Biodiversity Conservation and Inclusion; emphasis on Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and marginalized groups.
  2. Wetland Forest Governance; emphasis on mangrove ecosystems.

Eligibility and Expectations

Applicants are expected to:

  • Propose grant amounts that align with the research scope and innovation.
  • Prioritize actionable solutions to translate governance concepts into practice.

Applicants should ensure that the grant amount they request accurately reflects the scope and innovative nature of their proposed research, particularly in translating forest landscape governance concepts into actionable solutions.

In addition to financial support, Explore offers capacity development opportunities facilitated by the Explore Secretariat (a partnership between RECOFTC and CIFOR-ICRAF). Grantees will also benefit from expert mentorship throughout the project, ensuring guidance and support during implementation.

Successful research teams will join the Explore Community of Practice (CoP), established during Explore Phase I (2020–2022) and now expanding in Phase II (2023–2027). The CoP fosters collaboration and knowledge-sharing among researchers, providing a valuable platform for advancing forest landscape governance research.
