Backing biodiversity: Financing forests & trees
Backing biodiversity: Financing forests & trees
CIFOR-ICRAF at UNCBD COP16
21 Oct – 1 Nov 2024, Cali, ColombiaBreaking Ground on Youth Indicators for Biodiversity
Young people all over the world are making significant collective contributions to achieving biodiversity targets, from on-ground action to decision-making and from local to global. However, these contributions go unrecognized and unaccounted for because of the lack of youth indicators and lack of support for youth-led monitoring on biodiversity, rendering them invisible to decision-makers. This also points to a gap in the monitoring of key youth provisions in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework such as Target 22, as well as a challenge in realizing a true whole-of-society approach to GBF monitoring and implementation.
It is this critical gap that the Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN) has been working to fill through diverse and iterative approaches to build the capacities of youth on indicators, assess gaps and opportunities, understand on-ground experiences and challenges, conduct intergenerational dialogues, and lay the groundwork for the development and operationalization of youth indicators for biodiversity.
In this side event, GYBN will share the outcomes of their youth-led work since 2022 on youth-related indicators and monitoring for biodiversity, and explore ways for diverse stakeholders to support the advancement of ground-breaking work to make the invisible visible.
