Collaborative Action for Sustainable Wildlife Management - Highlights from Joint Initiatives of Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management
The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) provides a renewed and increasing focus on sustainable use of which sustainable wildlife management (SWM) is a critical element. Its importance not only contributes to conservation, but it also plays a crucial role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in support of the KMGBF, in particular with regards to the Framework's Targets 4, 5, and 9. Despite its vital role, SWM faces mounting anthropogenic challenges including human population growth, wildlife habitat loss, overexploitation of resources, climate change, pollution, complex human-wildlife interactions, and unsustainable technological advancements.
The Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management (CPW), established in response to the UNEP/CBD/COP/DEC/XI/25, has been at the forefront of promoting SWM through its 2023-2025 Joint Workplan. Launched during the margins of SBSTTA-25, the Workplan outlines eleven joint initiatives grouped under five CPW thematic objectives. The initiatives emphasize collaboration among CPW members and with other non-member organizations, highlighting a concerted effort to address the multifaceted challenges facing SWM.
The Workplan's joint initiatives contribute to the implementation of various internationally agreed frameworks, including the KMGBF under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). They also align with the objectives of other global biodiversity-related agreements, such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).
This side event will showcase the progress made on selected joint initiatives within the Workplan. The event will cover a range of topics, including advocating for sustainable and inclusive wild biodiversity economies; embedding SWM in the One Health agenda; testing CITES Non-Detriment Finding (NDF) Guidance; and enhancing benefits to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs).
Through these discussions, the CPW aims to illustrate the tangible benefits of SWM, not only for biodiversity conservation but also for enhancing the livelihoods of IPLCs and supporting KMGBF related targets. This side event is an opportunity to engage with international experts, share experiences, and explore collaborative pathways for advancing sustainable wildlife management.
