The role of gender in household decision making on tree planting: A case study from Malawi

This study examined gender roles in household decision making regarding tree planting in Malawi. The study surveyed 135 households and conducted focus groups in two districts. The results showed that decision making varied by gender, kinship structure, and activity. In patrilineal systems, male household heads made more solo decisions about tree planting, while matrilineal systems saw more joint decisions. Regression analysis found that kinship and who decided on tree management impacted tree density. The study concluded that assumptions about male household heads as sole decision makers are inaccurate, and that gender roles and decision making are complex and site-specific.
