CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

Session 1.1 cafnet

The document summarizes the CAFNET initiative to promote sustainable agroforestry of coffee in the Western Ghats of India. Some key points: 1. CAFNET studied traditional ecological knowledge, biodiversity, hydrology, carbon sequestration and the impact of shade-grown coffee on production and quality. 2. Inventories found over 200 tree and 120 bird species in coffee farms, and high tree densities can store over 200 tons of carbon per hectare. 3. Elephants are also found to feed on coffee, indicating the importance of coffee farms for biodiversity conservation in the fragmented landscape. 4. More shade is associated with lower yields but higher incomes when factoring
