CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

This document provides an overview of the charcoal sector in Sub-Saharan Africa by Klas Sander from the World Bank. It discusses how the discussion around the charcoal sector is often based on outdated and unreliable data. Rapid urbanization is driving increased charcoal use, with cities like Kinshasa, Maputo, and Kampala growing significantly. While forest loss has occurred, attributing it solely to charcoal production is an oversimplification, as agriculture is a larger driver. A modernized, holistic policy approach is needed to better manage forests and formalize the charcoal sector, rather than punitive measures which have not worked.
