CIFOR–ICRAF publishes over 750 publications every year on agroforestry, forests and climate change, landscape restoration, rights, forest policy and much more – in multiple languages.

CIFOR–ICRAF addresses local challenges and opportunities while providing solutions to global problems for forests, landscapes, people and the planet.

We deliver actionable evidence and solutions to transform how land is used and how food is produced: conserving and restoring ecosystems, responding to the global climate, malnutrition, biodiversity and desertification crises. In short, improving people’s lives.

'Tree planting' is not "Tree growing'!!

This document discusses the importance of tree growing over tree planting in restoration efforts. It notes that tree planting is often treated as the goal but there is little follow up to ensure the trees grow. As a result, many planted trees do not survive. It recommends that restoration projects commit to growing trees for multiple years after planting by providing water, management, and protecting tree tenure. Partnership models are also needed where responsibilities extend beyond the initial planting to ensure trees survive and landscapes are restored. The key messages are that projects should not promise restoration through just planting alone and that the objective should be growing trees, not just planting them.
