Restoring forests and other landscapes enhances their ability to provide essential ecosystem services, such as climate regulation, flood control, and protection of biodiversity. Restoration can also generate economic benefits for local communities.250 With an estimated 294.5 million people — 12 percent of the population in low-income countries—living on lands ripe for tropical forest restoration, 251 prioritizing local communities in these efforts can align global goals for climate mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development, thereby improving resilience and quality of life for those most affected. This chapter tracks progress towards the target of restoring 30 percent of degraded and deforested landscapes as set by Target 2 of the KM-GBF.
