Agroforestry and decision making in rural development

Ekspor kutipan

Decision making for changes in land use requires study of the problems to be solved and the potentials to be realised, together with knowledge of the range of possible alternatives. This needs a multidisciplinary approach, particularly if agroforestry - sytems and technologies which deliberately mix woody perennials with agricultural crops and/or animals - is to be used. Although the traditional farmer is familiar with the time taken for trees to mature, the benefits arising from agroforestry mixtures have a longer time-scale than most agricultural practices alone, and decision-making is therefore more complex. To assist in furthering agroforestry research and development in developing countries where more than one ministry may have some responsibility for the subject, the appointment of interdisciplinary committees may be a way of speeding up the decision-making process.
