A short review on the status of Chromolaena odorata, describing reports of its negative and positive effects. Well documented reports on negative aspects are few and are almost strictly limited to its effects in monoculture plantations of coconut, coffee, cotton and oil palm, or in reforested areas or pastures. However, farmer perceptions of the species are positive in Africa and Indonesia, where it is viewed as a desirable fallow species. It has also been shown to be a good cover crop, green manure, and effective in controlling Imperata cylindrica. ICRAF researchers are presently experimenting with Chromolaena odorata in fallow systems in SE Asia.
