Multi - environment trials (METs) are simply trials or experiments carried out in multiple environments or contexts. In agriculture and related environmental and rural development research , METs are standard research tools. In fact, s ome scientific journals in agriculture ha ve a rule that research is only acceptable for publication if results are available from several sites or seasons - that is, from multiple environments. The reason is that experience shows that results a re rarely exactly repeatable because they depend on t he environment. The same is true in other applied research areas such as health and education. METs are tool s for both finding out what is repeatable across a set of environments, and for helping to understand the reasons and mechanisms of non - repeatabil ity or interaction with the environment
