One of the main short training events is the international course on “Agroforestry Research for Integrated Land Use”, a 3-week introductory course organized for the benefit of scientists, development and extension specialists and policymakers who are about to embark on agroforestry research, development, training or education activities. The main objective of this course is to introduce participants to the principles, concepts and practice of agroforestry research and development through the characterization and diagnosis of land use systems and the design of appropriate agroforestry interventions, adoptable by farmers, and research leading to their improvement. At the core of this training course is a 3 to 4 day field exercise during which participants practice the application of farming household diagnosis and agroforestry intervention design based upon available land use characterization information at the community level. This exercise has evolved over the years to incorporate recent advances in agroforestry research and development andthis exercise book has been developed in support of it.
